A Small Family-Owned Company Grows up to become an Authoritarian Organization

Secure-Comm was a security company that was set up in 1975 as a small family owned company. The company provided electronic security and burglar alarms, and grew to a size where it was servicing over thirty-five hundred customers including Fortune 500 companies and government organizations. It was also employing professional staff with expertise in telecommunications, security and microprocessor-based low voltage systems.

Though the company had grown much larger, the working environment in the organization was far from pleasant. Functional managers focused on their functional objectives. The hierarchical structure was authoritarian. Policies and procedures in force left little room for employees to contribute. In short, it was a typical scenario where employees were ordered about and yet expected to contribute their best to the organization.
