In its Export News of 28 July 2010, NZTE released a report by Knotridge Ltd on the New Zealand aviation industry. The report emphasises the importance of aviation to New Zealand and predicts a continuation of its sizeable growth of recent years. To substantiate this optimism, areas of advantage are identified and competitive aspects of the New Zealand business environment explained.
The value of the aviation industry to New Zealand in 2009 was put at $9.7 billion - an average growth rate over the last five years of 9.5%. The report’s conservative growth estimate for the next five year period is 5.3% pa., providing an industry worth $12.6 billion by 2015. Optimistically a 9% pa. increase in value to $15 billion is projected. Aviation currently contributes some 6.9% to New Zealand’s Gross Domestic Product and employs over 25,000 people in more than 1,000 organisations.
New Zealand’s Aviation Industry Today
Some 61% of aviation revenue is generated domestically, the balance from export trade. Care was taken in the analysis of export revenue to exclude international activities that relate to domestic customers, the most obvious being New Zealanders travelling abroad.
