The first day of fall each year is observed as the Falls Prevention Awareness Day in the United States. Among other things, the day also aims to create awareness about your legal rights if you suffer from a personal injury caused due to a fall, trip or slip that could have been prevented if the premises or property where it took place was not faulty.

There have been several studies that reveal most falls can be prevented if the issue is addressed seriously for all age groups, ranging from children to older adults.

The CDC says that every year one out of three Americans in the age group 65 and older suffers from a fall. The outcome of a fall may be serious, including fracture of the hip bone or traumatic head injuries. It may also cause premature death in certain cases. Most of these falls are preventable, says the CDC. The state health department in New York says that the annual cost of fall-related hospitalization alone is $1.3 billion in the state.
