Easily one of the most picturesque neighborhoods in a city full of charming nooks, the Bo-Kaap was formerly known as the “Malay Quarter” of Cape Town. This misnomer implies a cultural singularity in the area, while in fact the first migrants, brought over as slaves by the Dutch, were from various parts of India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia and Africa. The Bo-Kaap is distinctive for its cobblestone pathways, brightly colored houses, and Cape Malay and Muslim influence, evident in every aspect of local life from the delicious spicy cooking to the frequent calls to prayer emanating from the local mosque.
